Introduction
The Star Wars saga has captivated billions of viewers since 1977. At the heart of this universe lies a millennia-old conflict between two opposing orders: the Jedi, guardians of peace, and the Sith, devotees of the Dark Side. But beyond the lightsabers and space battles, it is the Force that gives Star Wars its mythological depth. What exactly is the Force? Why do the Jedi forbid attachments? How did the Sith survive for centuries in the shadows? What do the lightsaber colors mean? This article dives deep into Star Wars mythology to explain everything about the Force, both orders, and the characters who shaped the galaxy.
The Force: What Is It?
The Force is an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds and penetrates everything, binding the galaxy together. Obi-Wan Kenobi gives the first definition in A New Hope (1977), and this description remains the most iconic in the entire saga.
Midi-chlorians
In The Phantom Menace (1999), George Lucas introduced a controversial concept: midi-chlorians. These are microscopic organisms present in the cells of all living beings. The more midi-chlorians an individual has, the stronger their connection to the Force. Anakin Skywalker's midi-chlorian count exceeded even Yoda's, making him the potential "Chosen One." This concept divided fans: some see it as a welcome rationalization, others feel it strips the Force of its mystical dimension.
The Light Side and the Dark Side
The Force has two facets. The Light Side is associated with peace, knowledge, serenity, and harmony. The Jedi draw their power from calm and meditation. The Dark Side feeds on anger, fear, hatred, and aggression. As Yoda says: "Quicker, easier, more seductive is the Dark Side. But not stronger."
The Balance of the Force
The Chosen One prophecy foretells that an individual will bring balance to the Force. For a long time, the Jedi believed this meant destroying the Sith. But balance is a more subtle concept: it implies that neither light nor darkness completely dominates. Anakin Skywalker, by destroying Emperor Palpatine, ultimately fulfills this prophecy.
Force Abilities
Force users master extraordinary abilities: telekinesis (moving objects with the mind), mind tricks ("These aren't the droids you're looking for"), Force lightning (Palpatine's signature attack), Force visions (premonitions), and the ability to become a Force ghost after death — a power rediscovered by Qui-Gon Jinn and passed on to Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin.
The Jedi Order: Guardians of Peace
The Jedi Code
The Jedi Code is the philosophical creed that guides every member of the Order:
"There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force."
Each line expresses an ideal. Rejecting emotion doesn't mean the absence of feeling, but refusing to be ruled by impulse. Knowledge triumphs over ignorance, which explains the vast archives of the Jedi Temple. Serenity replaces consuming passion, and harmony opposes the chaos the Sith sow. Finally, death is not an end: a Jedi becomes one with the Force, as demonstrated by Force ghosts.
The Jedi Hierarchy
The Jedi Order has a clear structure:
- Younglings: Force-sensitive children recruited very young and trained at the Coruscant Temple in the basics of the Force.
- Padawans: apprentices chosen by a Jedi Master. The Padawan wears a distinctive braid that is cut when they become a Knight.
- Jedi Knights: after passing the Trials, a Padawan becomes a Knight, free to carry out missions independently.
- Jedi Masters: the wisest and most experienced, some sit on the Jedi Council.
- Grand Master: Yoda held this title for centuries, leading the Council and the entire Order.
The Trials to Become a Knight
A Padawan must pass five trials:
- Trial of Skill: demonstrate mastery of the lightsaber and the Force.
- Trial of Courage: face a situation of real danger without flinching.
- Trial of the Spirit: resist the temptations of the Dark Side in an inner confrontation.
- Trial of the Flesh: endure physical pain or loss (Anakin loses his hand in Attack of the Clones).
- Trial of Insight: solve a complex dilemma with wisdom.
The Padawan must also build their own lightsaber on the planet Ilum, finding a kyber crystal that resonates with them.
The Prohibition of Attachments
Jedi cannot form romantic attachments. Why? Because the fear of losing a loved one leads to anger, then to hatred, then to the Dark Side. Anakin's secret marriage to Padme is the perfect example: it is his fear of losing her that pushes him into Palpatine's arms and transforms him into Darth Vader.
