Explanation: The black Mokorotlo (Basotho hat) on a blue-white-green background. Adopted in 2006 to replace a more militaristic flag.

Explanation: The red triangle with the olive branch recalls the Liberation Front flag (1952). Independence from Ethiopia in 1993.

Explanation: Blue (Issas/sea), green (Afars/land), white (peace) and the red star symbolize the unity of the two main peoples.

Explanation: The flag of Rwanda, adopted in 2001, consists of three horizontal stripes: blue (top, wider), yellow and green. A golden sun with 24 rays appears in the upper right corner. This flag symbolizes the country's renewal after the 1994 genocide.

Explanation: The 10 stars in a circle represent the 10 main islands of the archipelago. Blue evokes the Atlantic Ocean.
