Explanation: Expecto Patronum. This is an extremely complex charm: you must focus on a very powerful happy memory. The Patronus''s (corporeal) form reflects the caster''s personality and can change (Tonks''s becomes a werewolf after her relationship with Lupin).

Explanation: Avada Kedavra. A lethal green bolt of light, with no known counter-spell. Using it on a human means an automatic life sentence in Azkaban. Harry is the only one ever to survive it (thanks to his mother''s love). It''s Voldemort''s signature curse.

Explanation: Lumos. The counter-spell is Nox (to extinguish). A stronger variant: Lumos Maxima — creates a brilliant ball of light. Very handy for reading under the covers at night, exploring dark tunnels, or fighting Inferi in a cave.

Explanation: Alohomora. Its name means "friend to thieves" in an imaginary African tongue. Hermione uses it as early as Book 1 to open the door leading to Fluffy. It doesn''t work on doors protected by stronger magical enchantments (e.g., Snape''s office).

Explanation: Accio. Harry uses it spectacularly in the first Triwizard task in Book 4 to summon his Firebolt against the Hungarian Horntail. He learns the charm with Hermione over weeks of grueling practice.

Explanation: Stupefy. One of the most commonly used combat spells — often cast simultaneously by several Aurors or Death Eaters to subdue a target. The reversal spell to wake the victim is Enervate (or Rennervate in recent editions).

Explanation: Crucio (Cruciatus Curse). It doesn''t kill, but causes unbearable suffering that can drive people mad. Neville''s parents, Frank and Alice Longbottom, were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix and Barty Crouch Jr just after the first war.

Explanation: Imperio (Imperius Curse). Makes the victim docile and obedient. It is possible to resist with great willpower: Harry manages it as early as Book 4 in Moody''s class. Many Death Eaters claim after the first war that they were Imperiused — a false excuse.

Explanation: Petrificus Totalus (Full Body-Bind Curse). The arms snap to the body, legs stiffen, and the person topples backward like a board. Hermione uses it on Neville in Book 1 to stop him from turning them in — she apologises later, very emotionally.

Explanation: Riddikulus. You must picture something ridiculous about your fear. Neville turns Snape into his ridiculous grandmother. Ron puts roller-skates on a giant spider. Laughter is the ultimate weapon against fear.

Explanation: Protego (Shield Charm). Stronger variants: Protego Maxima, Protego Totalum, Protego Horribilis. Hogwarts teachers use these to protect the entire castle in the final Battle — creating visible magical domes around the towers.

Explanation: Morsmordre. After the first murders, the spell first appeared in 1981. It spreads panic: seeing the Mark above a house means someone inside has been killed. In Book 4, Barty Crouch Jr casts it at the Quidditch World Cup.

Explanation: Reparo. Very handy for Harry''s broken glasses, which Hermione fixes many times, or for reassembling a shattered vase. Ron''s wand, broken in Book 2 by the Whomping Willow, resists Reparo — it stays cracked and spits sparks all year long.

Explanation: Aguamenti. Used by Dumbledore in the cave in Book 6 to make a dying Dumbledore drink the suffering potion. Harry later uses it in the Forbidden Forest. The spell doesn''t create water from nothing — it "summons" ambient water from the surroundings.

Explanation: Obliviate (Memory Charm). Used by the Ministry to preserve the International Statute of Secrecy. Gilderoy Lockhart was its expert, eventually botching the spell on himself and losing all his memories at St Mungo''s. Hermione uses it on her parents to protect them.
