Explanation: The Scottish Highlands, a mountainous region in the north. The castle is Unplottable (protected by the Fidelius Charm) and disguised: Muggles see it only as a dangerous ruin. It overlooks a vast dark lake home to the Giant Squid.

Explanation: It mirrors the sky outside. Enchanted by Rowena Ravenclaw according to Hogwarts: A History, it shows real weather — clouds, stars, snow, lightning. Hermione tells Ron at the first feast that it''s just "bewitched to look like the sky outside".

Explanation: The Fat Lady, a portrait in a pink dress. You must give her the password to enter. In Book 3, Sirius Black slashes her painting with a knife and she flees to other portraits — temporarily replaced by Sir Cadogan, an eccentric knight.

Explanation: In the dungeons, beneath the Black Lake. The windows look out on the dark waters, creating a greenish underwater light — sometimes aquatic creatures drift by. The atmosphere is cold and imposing, with black leather armchairs and silver chandeliers.
